This road was appropriately named after the first elementary school built in Sprowston which was then approximately in the centre of the parish. By the late 1800s the road had become truly industrial the school being surrounded by brickfields. It is hard to believe that at one time School Lane was part of the Norwich ring road. With the annexation of part of Sprowston by the City of Norwich in 1907, what had been a road in the centre of the parish almost became its boundary. The post-World War II increase in traffic made such a small lane on fit for purpose and it was re-placed by a modern road. The 1950s saw the final demise of the brick yards, after the landfill the area became a mix of industrial and residential sites.
