Burrage Family
Burrage Family
Henry Burrage 1850-1933 was born in Norwich to Edward and Sarah Burrage, his father Edward was a master baker originating from Downham Market so it was no surprise to find that Henry and his brothers were all to follow in that profession.
Henry however had not always been a baker as at the age of 21 he was found staying with his uncle George Norris in Kentish Town London working as a harness maker Henry had returned to Norwich by 1873 when he married Amelia Brooks in Lakenham the place of her birth. There then appears to have been a return to London as the first of their children Amelia 1876 and Alice 1878 were born in Hendon.
The census of 1881 found the family back in Norwich living on what was then Wroxham Road today known as Sprowston Road where Henry now aged 30 was finally working as a baker, living with him was his younger brother Alfred also in the same trade.Henry continued in the bakery business as well as selling groceries and later became the local post master assisted by his wife Amelia. Their address in 1911 was given as 476 Sprowston Road. Amelia was to die in 1914 but Henry was to live for many more years passing away in 1933 at the age of 83 years.
The premises at 476 Sprowston Road were taken over by Stanley Hawes becoming an ironmongers and hardware shop in 1925 and it remained that way for close on 30years, later it was to be in the hands of A.F.Gibson a builder for a short period of time. In the 1960`s the shop was then used as a ironmongers and hardware store firstly by Homes and Garden Ltd. to be followed by M.E.Sexton Ltd. in the same line of business. In more recent years the premises have been the fishing tackle shop of Dave Plummer then as Angling Direct and currently in 2017 it is the Norwich Express Store.
