Ship Public House

The ship public house had a life of only 35 years. Records suggest that Steward, Patterson and Finch began supplying beer as early as 1848 however no licensee is recorded until 1851. The actual situation of the premises seems unclear, various sources claim it was near the Black Horse although Ordinance Survey maps mark a public house at the entrance to Shipfields opposite where the Primitive Methodist Chapel stood but alas the 6 inch maps give no clue to the name.

Unlike the Black Horse and The Ship had a full licence enabling them to sell wines and spirits however the licensees as with many public houses within Sprowston seem to have had connections with the brick making industry and especially the Burrows family in the case of this licensed premises. Whatever the reason Steward and Patterson closed the premises in 1883 the following year the licensing authority refused to renew the licence although the grounds decision are unclear.

With such scant details we would welcome any further information regarding the location and more details of the premises. If you could help please see our contact section.
